As the year comes to a close it is a good time to reflect on the year’s learning. I decided to make a list of common observations I’ve made in guiding my clients to improve their careers and lives. Although this list is not exhaustive it gives enough food for thought to make changes in how you can better manage your career to feel rewarded in the work that you do and also to improve your quality of life.
- If you do not jump out of bed to go to work then you are not engaged in your work. Find out why that is and make a plan to change your situation.
- If you are not scared (in a positive way!) about doing your job then you are not excited enough to make a difference. Wake up scared each day and use that energy to make a difference.
- Do not manage your career by trial and error. Most people manage their career in a state of unconscious incompetence (“blind ignorance”). Become aware of what you do not know and seek the right help.
- Build relationships with everyone around you. Make your ecosystem speak for you and help you to make a difference. Most career setbacks stem from badly managed relationships.
- Be the best at something (personal mastery) in your work and become the go-to person in that area. To be mediocre in something takes the same effort as it does to become the best at it. It is only a matter of how you apply your focus.
- Be approachable. Mentor others and get yourself a mentor. Both will help YOU grow.
- Learn something new every day. Learn how to listen better.
- Become a great communicator. Learn how to speak well using impeccable words and language. Practice writing every day and improve your message. Learn how to tell YOUR story well.
- Be grateful for all that you are and show your gratitude in your actions.
- Smile and smile often. Smile at strangers. It will make others wonder what you know that they do not.
Good luck in all your endeavors and may the Universe bless you with all its gifts!
